CVOID-19 EMERGENCY RESPONSE FUND

What is the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund?

On March 20, 2020 after seeing a surge in need for basic necessities in response to the outbreak of COVID-19, United Way Niagara created the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund. This fund supports the work of our frontline partner agencies that are at the forefront of this issue and are collectively striving to ensure our most vulnerable citizens are safe and healthy.

United Way Niagara was able to respond to the increased needs of local agencies quickly and efficiently with funds raised from the Emergency Response Fund. The fund enabled us to make a significant impact for those most affected by COVID-19.

Emergency Response Fund Highlights

When COVID-19 forced the Niagara economy to a halt, it became immediately apparent that food security would be the number one issue for our partners. We immediately went to work securing significant quantities of healthy food, to ensure those who need immediate access would have it. Funding supported over 25 food programs with thousands of pounds of emergency food in the early days of the pandemic, feeding thousands of individuals and families across the region.

Service providers across the region have received funding and/or food and hygiene items to help mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the most vulnerable people in Niagara. The fund also allowed United Way to increase capacity to serve seniors, people in isolation and phone counselling services in response to growing needs.

Special Initiative Spotlight:

When schools closed in March, so did after school programs. United Way immediately recognized that the youth who come to our programs daily relied on the social supports and nutritional food they received.

In lieu of After School Matters programming, 203 families in at-risk neighborhoods received weekly care packages which included kid approved food items, educational activities, fun games, hygiene supplies and public health information.
