At Ridley College, the spirit of giving is alive and well, thanks to the dedicated staff and students who show us all how small acts of kindness can create a ripple of positive impact. This Giving Tuesday, we are celebrating these changemakers who are making a difference in their community and inspiring others to do the same.
Ridley’s ongoing partnership with United Way Niagara, which the school has supported for more than 20 years, with students leading initiatives to uplift local children and families.
Rooted in Reverend Dr. J.O. Miller’s vision from 1889, Ridley’s commitment to developing the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—is embodied by students’ dedication to serving others. “Guided by an aspirational vision, we inspire flourishing lives to transform our globe,” says Headmaster Ed Kidd. “Knowledge and wisdom are complemented by care and compassion; achievement and excellence are accompanied by health and wellbeing.” These values shine brightly in Ridley’s ongoing partnership with United Way Niagara, which the school has supported for more than 20 years, with students leading initiatives to uplift local children and families.
“The partnership with After School Matters started from the realization that the spaces on campus we get to enjoy every day are unique and special,” says Jay Tredway, Assistant Head of Co-Curriculars. “The students wanted to share that with other kids who may not have access to spaces like this in the same way.”
At the heart of this partnership is Ridley’s RAFT club—a student-led initiative that brings Ridley students together with children from nearby schools. Each week, Ridley students lead games, sports, and creative activities for 10 to 12-year-olds, offering the children a chance to experience Ridley’s beautiful campus while developing essential skills in communication and teamwork. “The partnership with After School Matters started from the realization that the spaces on campus we get to enjoy every day are unique and special,” says Jay Tredway, Assistant Head of Co-Curriculars. “The students wanted to share that with other kids who may not have access to spaces like this in the same way.” These hands-on experiences not only help younger students grow but also provide Ridley students with the opportunity to develop as leaders and mentors.
“I’ve been honored to serve as Ridley’s workplace campaign co-chair for our local United Way for nearly a decade,” says Marcie Lewis, PYP Coordinator at Ridley College. “I donate because I believe in the transformative work they do to support our community’s most vulnerable populations. Consistent funding is crucial for these agencies to continue their vital services, and I’m proud to contribute to this cause.”
Ridley’s commitment to the community goes beyond the RAFT club. The school organizes special events, such as fun days for After School Matters participants, featuring activities like skating and campus events. In addition, Ridley faculty and students come together year-round to support United Way Niagara’s initiatives. From Ridley’s annual workplace giving campaign – lead by campaign ambassadors Kory Lippert and Marcie Lewis whose generosity and dedication continue to fuel these impactful efforts – to collecting essential items for community members in need, seamlessly integrating philanthropy into their daily lives.

Through mentoring younger students, volunteering, and fundraising, they exemplify that anyone, regardless of age, can make a difference. In nurturing compassion and connection, they are building a legacy that will continue to shape the Niagara community for years to come.
Throughout the fall, Ridley’s United Way campaign rallies the entire school community. Through dress-down days, lunch fundraisers, and donation drives, Ridley has raised over $140,000 to support United Way’s programs and services, making a meaningful impact across Niagara.
