Development Officer, Individual Giving

Reports to: Manager, Major Gifts
Type of Position: Full-time, salaried, requires flexible hours
Closing Date: January 31, 2020

The purpose of the position is to formulate and implement donor development strategies for individual donors with the ability and inclination to contribute personal Major Gifts of $5,000 or more, along with special one-time targeted gifts and endowment gifts to The Forever Fund. In addition, the incumbent will report to and work closely with the Manager, Major Gifts in short and long range planning. The incumbent will ensure all activities are in keeping with the United Way’s vision, mission, goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • - Conduct research, oversee cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects and donors
  • - Provide strategic support to workplace campaigns in major gift goal setting, prospecting, solicitation, tracking and stewardship of annual gifts
  • - Develop targeted solicitation strategies for individual donors or workplace groups of donors as required
  • - Prepare written materials associated with management of donors and prospects (e.g. development of targeted proposals, progress/stewardship reports on projects funded and general correspondence)
  • - Maximize use of Raisers Edge database in managing major gift activity (e.g. tracking moves on individual prospects, tracking volunteer and staff activity, manage strategic information on donors and prospects, etc.)
  • - Strategic use of Case for Support for the development of written proposals for special gift solicitation and in communicating with donors and prospects about the priorities of United Way
  • - Assist with the planning, production and evaluation of all communications for fund raising programs
  • - Assists with donor and volunteer recognition activities

Job Requirements:

  • - Post Secondary education in business, communications, or not-for-profit management. CFRE designation considered an asset.
  • - 3-5 years experience in fundraising environment – specifically in the area of major individual gifts.
  • - Demonstrated track record in major individual gift cultivation and solicitation activity
  • - Superior communication skills (both written and verbal) and well-developed interpersonal skills
  • - High degree of comfort with sophisticated donor database
  • - Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • - Experience with tracking financial results
  • - Volunteer management experience
  • - Strong organizational skills
  • - Team player and enthusiasm for new ideas
  • - Ability to manage multiple tasks under stringent guidelines
  • - Outgoing personality
  • - Analytical skills – good with numbers
  • - Flexibility
  • - Detail and goal oriented
  • - Fundraising experience and knowledge of not-for-profit systems
  • - Access to a vehicle
