General
Who runs the United Way?
Each United Way is autonumous and run by a local Board of Directors. Hundreds of volunteers also work on various committees from campaign, to allocations, to special events.
Will I ever benefit from the United Way?
Yes. Statistics prove 1 in 3 persons benefit from one or more of the services provided by United Way funded agencies.
Why not let the government do it?
Because of volunteers, United Way agencies can provide services more effectively and at reduced costs, while allowing citizens direct input into the development and control of their services.
Why should I give to the United Way?
Your one donation helps support 90 programs run by 36 agencies. 1 in 3 people in our communities benefit from your one donation.
United Way of Niagara Falls and Greater Fort Erie
Why do you fundraise for two communities?
The United Way is an organization that embraces the uniqueness of each community. To maintain the local flavour of the newly amalgamated United Way, the Board decided to continue to fundraise and allocate in both Niagara Falls and Greater Fort Erie.
Why did you amalgamate?
The Boards of both United Ways decided a joined United Way would better serve both communities by being more efficient and cost-effective.
Can I make sure my donation goes towards my community?
Yes. You can note on your pledge form exactly where your donation is directed - Niagara Falls, Greater Fort Erie, St. Catharines, or South Niagara. The choice is in the donors' hands.
How can I get involved?
You can send us an e-mail, unitedway@caninet.com, or you can phone us, 905-354-9342 or 905-871-5454. Better yet, why not visit us in person.
Financial
Why does the United Way not fund all agencies?
Membership in the United Way is voluntary and some agencies choose not to participate.
How much should I give?
Giving is a personal matter. The United Way appreciates each gift, whether it's monetary or simply volunteer time. A standard requested gift is for $1.00 per week (or $52/year) on payroll deduction.
Why do some agencies charge a fee for service?
Agencies are encouraged to establish a "fee for service" based on an individual's ability to pay. United Way provides funds so that no one is denied agency service based on financial circumstance.
Who decides how donations are allocated?
Each member agency submits a budget to be reviewed by the Allocation and Agency Relations Committee, which then makes final recommendations to be approved by the Board.
Why do some agencies conduct separate fundraising drives?
United Way funding is not always enough to meet all the agency needs.
Do you have an Annual Report?
Yes. Please contact us if you would like to receive one.
